According to my estudiante (Jelly) History is what happens and we teach it so people can know what happened. (Laura T-F)
Besides giving us a clearer picture of who we are, we must learn from the mistakes of the past or we are surely doomed to repeat them. I believe it was Churchill who said that well before I did. (Gary H.)
Many have said we teach history to prevent repeating mistakes of the past. This might be true but we have failed pretty miserably at avoiding the repeating of mistakes. I think the more valuable lessons of history is in giving us a sense of self, and knowledge of just how it is we arrived in this situation and this time and place. Humans do have a natural curiousity and many of us do wonder how we happen to get to this place. History can provide part of the answer to that question. (Ken G.)
History is the story told by the winners. We teach it to understand the past and let it shape the future and to know the truth. (Mike B.)
History: His-story. Notoriously transcribed by the a superior power and aristocracy to preserve and protect the prestigious and perceivably noble. Only now, with advances in our technology are we able theoretically rewrite, capture, and recreate the frameworks of how and what we wish to chronicle those events worthy of historical reference.
History is our collective memory/identity. It shapes who we are and where we are going. And yes, those who fail to learn our history are doomed to repeat it. Though, I don't believe that history repeats itself, it sure does rhyme.
Why not teach herstory as well? Why is HERstory not taught? (Margo S.)
As Dionysius said, "history is philosophy teaching by examples." (Dave G.)
what is history? sounds pretty hypothetical, with that said - without the study of history, every generation would be starting over - we'd still be working on inventing the wheel... lol. (Juniper L.)
Nice. History is our story. We simply are studying ourselves. What we learn from the past hopefully we apply to the future. However, any wisdom being applied in contemporary culture I don't see. (Colin Q.)
